In the spirit of the season, this week we have one sugar plum and one lump of coal.

The sugar plum goes to Kerry Simmons of Independence, who was among those who came up with ShowMeMO as a suggested new name for Amtrak service between Kansas City and St. Louis. The other four suggestions, also from Missouri residents, are Missouri Rail Blazer, Missouri River Runner, River Cities Corridor and Truman Service.

Let’s hope Simmons’ suggestion does well (although using the Truman name is always popular too).

Anyone can contact the Missouri Department of Transportation to vote. The voting ends Jan. 23, and the new name is to be announced Jan. 30.

The lump of coal goes to Jackson County Legislator Scott Burnett, who will be the new chairman of the Legislature in a couple of weeks. Asked for a comment, his office simply said no.

Really? With all the challenges this county faces – not the least of which is many legislators’ attitudes of unaccountabiluty to the public – how can the incoming chairman have nothing to say to the public.
