This week, I’m taking a look at some new beers planned for 2013 from breweries throughout New England. Let me tell you, some of them look fantastic.
Clown Shoes of Ipswich, Mass., has several things planned. First, several of their existing beers, including Hoppy Feet and Tramp Stamp, will be available in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles for the first time. There will also be a brand-new IPA called Galctica in the four-packs.
Later in the year, Clown Shoes has several 22-ounce bomber releases planned, including a "breakfast brown" ale called The Barista; an American barley wine called Crunkle Same, and for Christmas, look for Fruit Cake, which is a Belgian quad made with roasted walnuts and cherries, all aged in brandy barrels.
Gritty McDuff’s of Portland, Maine, will be turning 25 this year and to celebrate they are brewing several limited-released beers available in bombers and on draft at Gritty McDuff pubs. The only information available right now is that the first one will be released in March and it will be an oatmeal stout. Every one of the limited released beers will be 6.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) or higher.
Harpoon Brewery of Boston and Windsor, Vt., has several things in the works. The next 100 Barrel Series beer, available in the next month or so, will be the Director’s Cut, which is described as a blend of a pale ale and a stout.
Following that will be a Belgian ale that was the winner of the brewery’s annual employee homebrew contest.
Available later this year in the summer mixed packs will be a new seasonal beer called the Midsummer Fling, which uses lemongrass and elderflower. In the spring, Harpoon will be releasing a new cider called Honey Cider.
Also, this week Harpoon is installing its own canning line, and in February Harpoon’s new visitor center and beer hall will be opening.
Jack’s Abby Brewing in Framingham, Mass., will be busy. The new Private Rye Biere De Garde Rye Lager will be available soon in four-packs.
In February or March, Jack's Abby's barrel-aged Framinghammer Baltic Porter, aged in bourbon barrels, will be available.
Later this year, Jack’s Abby plans to release a totally different double India pale lager than their popular Kiwi’s Rising.
Long Trail Brewing Company of Bridgewater Corner’s, Vt., will release the second beer in its Brown Bag Series. The Bavarian Smoked Brown will be available in draft only at the beginning of the year. It comes in at 5.4 percent ABV, and according to the brewery, the "awesomeness level" is "high."
Next week, the new 2013 An Dreoilin from Mystic Brewery of Chelsea, Mass., will hit stores. Along with that saison, Mystic will debut a saffron saison brewed with new Washington, D.C., brewery Blue Jacket at the Beer Advocate Extreme Beer Fest in Boston in February.
Notch Brewing of Cambridge, Mass., will continue its mission of brewing high-flavor, but low-alcohol beers in 2013. They have two new beers planned, yet to be named. All owner, Chris Lohring, said was that the new spring release will be an American style and the summer beer will be based on a German style. They will be available in bombers and on draft, and unlike many of Notch’s recent beers, Lohring promises people will easily be able to pronounce the names of the beers.
The Otter Creek Brewing Company/Wolavers of Middlebury, Vt., is working on a collaborative spring release with "one of the hottest names in brewing here in Vermont." They have yet to release the name of that brewery.
On the Wolaver’s side, they will debut a new year-round beer, the Organic Amber Lager.
Samuel Adams in Jamaica Plain has several new beers that will debut this year. The new beers are the Maple Pecan Porter, the Double Agent IPL (India pale lager) and the White Lantern, a new Belgian-style wheat beer.
All three beers will be in the new Samuel Adams Spring Thaw Variety Pack. The Double Agent IPL and the White Lantern will be available year-round, while the Maple Pecan Porter will only be available in the mixed pack.
Also coming out in the first quarter of the year will be the New Albion Ale, a recreation of the beer brewed by Jack McAuliffe’s New Albion Brewing Company in California, and a beer many regard as the first craft beer.
The Somerville Brewing Company, aka Slumbrew, of Somerville, Mass., has two new beers. The Attic & Eaves Toasted Brown Ale should be in stores now, while the new Snow Angel double India pale ale, should be available later this month.
The Smuttynose Brewing Company of Portsmouth, N.H., is moving soon to Hampton, N.H., and has three new beers on the horizon.
In February, the Noonan, a black India pale, will be available in six-packs. It was brewed in honor of Greg Noonan, a New England brewing pioneer, who passed away in 2009.
Also from Smuttynose, the Rye IPA, which was available only at the brewery last year, will be joining the Big Beer Series in the summer and will be more widely available. Smuttynose is also brewing a session (or low-alcohol IPA, called ParadoX for the 10th Anniversary of the Mohegan Sun Wine and Food Festival.
The Wachusett Brewing Company of Westminster, Mass., is releasing the first-ever Light IPA. It will be available in cans beginning in March. It should be interesting to see how this is accepted in the craft beer world, which usually shuns light beers.
And finally, the Wormtown Brewery in Worcester, Mass., has several things in the works.
Hogshead Red, a 6 percent ABV red ale aged in wine barrels with raspberries, will be available on draft only. Other draft-only beers will be the brand-new Upstate Amber, made with all New York malt and hops, and Tennessee Tats, a breakfast stout aged in whiskey barrels.
Available in bombers from April to September will be the Mass Whole Hefe Weizen, and from October through March, Norm, the chocolate-coconut stout named after me, will be available in bottles for the first time.
Writing about all these tasty-sounding new beers has made me thirsty. Cheers to 2013!
