For the fifth year in a row, the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence is hosting the National Silver Gloves Boxing Tournament. The three-day event runs Thursday through Saturday.

This year’s competition, the 47th anniversary of the Silver Gloves program, is scheduled to include more than 350 children, ages 8 to 15, in various weight and age classes. Three boxing rings will be set up in the Hilton Garden Inn’s Truman Grand Ballroom.

“They’re very accommodating, and it’s the perfect venue for our needs,” said Albert Guardado, a spokesperson for Combat Brands, which works with Silver Gloves to conduct the tournament. “The staff at Hilton Garden Inn, they used to work in Olathe (a previous site for the event), and we kind of followed them.”

Guardado said, at last check, there 356 young athletes scheduled to compete after advancing from local, state and regional tournaments.

“They’re from all over the country,” Guardado said. “They have to earn their way here. We’re looking at a lot of hard work going into this – several months.”

The Silver Gloves Tournament will have four sessions: 6 p.m. Thursday, 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday and the finals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Combat Brands also helps run the Ringside World Championships, which this summer will be at the Independence Events Center for the second year in a row.
