Hennessy invited to academy seminar

William Chrisman High School student John Hennessy will participate in the 2013 U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar program.

The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., invited a select group of 2,250 young men and women from around the nation to attend the program, which included Hennessy. The Summer Seminar teaches prospective applicants about life at the Naval Academy. Each student will attend a six-day session and experience a glimpse of USNA life that includes the opportunity to live at Bancroft Hall, eat in King Hall and participate in academic and leadership workshops.

Foundation raises $75,000 at gala

The Independence School District Foundation held a gala on March 22 and raised nearly $75,000 that will directly go toward helping students in the district.

The funding will be able to pay for student scholarships, assistance for families in need, the district’s Holiday Helpers program and more.

More than 375 people attended the event, which made it the largest Foundation fundraiser in the organization’s history.


Eaton earns UMC scholarship for fall

Blue Springs South High School senior Brandon Eaton has earned a Red and Black Scholarship to attend the University of Central Missouri in the amount of $2,000 per year.

The scholarship is awarded to incoming UCM freshmen based upon their high school cumulative grade point average and ACT composite score. It is also renewable and may be received for a maximum of eight semesters of undergraduate study.

Eaton will attend UCM in the fall to study business.


Culver awarded $10,000 for college

Fort Osage High School senior Alexandria Culver has earned a $10,000 scholarship to attend Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Culver submitted pieces of her work for the college’s annual Art Day Competition, in which she won the scholarship. Students from all over the country and outside of the US submitted a total 390 pieces of work. In the end, 20 students were awarded scholarships, which included Culver.
