The city of Independence is taking nominations for the Susan Paxton Block Distinguished Public Service Award, honoring a former City Council member.

Anyone can make a nomination. The award is for a city employee, volunteer or elected official who “has demonstrated outstanding public service, valor and job performance with leadership,” according to the city.

Nominations are due by Aug. 15. Forms are available in several ways:

• On the city’s website – Go to the Susan Paxton Block Public Service story.

• The Independence Chamber of Commerce, 210 W. Truman Road.

• From city department heads.

• From Judy McNeel, past president of the Junior Service League. She’s at 816-461-0027. Block was a president of the group.

Block represented the city’s Third District from 1992 until her death in 1996. Her father, Bill Paxton, established the award. The award is $1,000, a sterling silver medallion and a sterling silver lapel pin. It is to be presented at a City Council meeting on Sept. 15.
