A fourth-quarter fumble cost Grain Valley a chance at an MRVC West football victory.
With the Eagles trailing just 14-8, Grain Valley quarterback Kellen Holland was sacked at his own 16-yard line and Odessa’s Trevor Plafcan scooped it up the loose ball and returned it for a score to help the host Bulldogs hang on for a 21-16 victory Friday night.
The touchdown with 11:43 left, which put Odessa ahead 21-8, proved to be crucial after Grain Valley drove downfield and scored on a Zack Ehlen touchdown run with 6:42 left. Jacob Miller ran in a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to five.
But the Eagles couldn’t manage another score as they dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Missouri River Valley Conference West standings.
Holland tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass for Luke Sedgwick and Isaiah Duong ran in a two-point conversion with 5:58 left in the first quarter to give Grain Valley an 8-0 lead.
Odessa (6-3, 2-3) responded with a pair of second-quarter scores – a 14-yard TD pass from Jake Bartow to Colby Nickels and a Mason Smith 2-yard plunge – to take a 14-8 halftime lead.
Odessa only outgained Grain Valley 255-250 overall. Grain Valley had 182 yards in the air on Holland’s 19-of-30 passing, while Odessa gained 173 of its yards on the ground, including 101 on 15 carries by Bartow.
Ehlen led the Eagles in rushing with 63 yards and a score on 14 carries. Sedgwick finished with five receptions for 82 yards and a score.
