A former Independence man has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl on multiple occasions, which lead him to father a child with her.

Brad Dayton, 36, of Illinois, faces one count of statutory rape and two counts of statutory sodomy. Jackson County prosecutors have requested a $100,000 bond.

According to the probable cause statement, Independence Police began investigating Dayton’s alleged sexual relations with an underage girl in 2011. However, when all parties involved in the investigation became uncooperative over the years, detectives closed the case. It was re-opened this January when the victim, now an adult, drove from Illinois to the Independence Police Department to interview with police once again.

In December 2011, the victim’s mother reported to Independence Police that her daughter was raped multiple times from her 8th through 10th grade years, and that she was pregnant at the time. She said Dayton would threaten her with physical harm if she told anyone what was happening between him and her daughter.

The girl was soon interviewed by the Child Protection Center and said Dayton had been raping her since the end of her eighth grade year.

However, in February 2012, Independence detectives received a call from the Jackson County Division of Family Services informing them that the mother and girl had moved to Illinois with Dayton two days after the daughter was interviewed by the Child Protection Center.

Detectives closed Dayton’s case that same month due to the mother not cooperating with the investigation and that all involved parties were out of state.

This past January, the victim drove from Illinois to the Independence Police Department and had an interview with detectives. She revealed that Dayton began raping her when she was 14 years old, and had a baby in January 2012.

The girl also provided paternity test results to police that showed her boyfriend at the time was not the father of her baby. She also said when she told Dayton that she was pregnant at the time, “he became excited” and he told her mother that he was having sex with her.

The victim told police that she lived with Dayton until she was 19. An arrangement was made for Dayton to pay her child support, which in return allowed him to keep the baby a few days a week. She also said that Dayton and her mother would tell other people that they had the child together.

Late last month, Independence investigators contacted the Madison, Illinois, Police Department. When obtaining a warrant for a buccal swap, a Madison detective informed them that he was familiar with Dayton because of his being the suspect in two separate open sexual assault cases involving juvenile victims.

On April 1, a Madison detective interviewed one of Dayton’s alleged victims from the two separate cases. The victim revealed to the detective that Dayton told them he had “purposefully impregnated the victim (the girl originally from Independence).”
