The First Presbyterian Church of Independence is offering a sermon series titled “Set Free” at both its 9:30 a.m. (traditional) and 11:30 a.m. (contemporary) worship times. The topic on Sunday will be "Set Free to Be."

On Saturday, April 16, the church is hosting a Family Movie Night in Westminster Hall, 417 W. Lexington Ave., tied to the next day's sermon, with dinner at 5 p.m. and the movie at 5:45 p.m.

The Gospelaires will be in concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Berean Free Will Baptist Church, 2104 James Downey Road, Independence. They have had a group for more than 40 years.

Independence First Christian is starting a new sermon series from the book of James entitled, “Maturing in Christ” and begins Sunday for both the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. services. Topics are as follows:

Sunday – Faith means we practice what we preach – 1:19-21.

• April 24 – A faith that does not discriminate – 2:1-13.

• May 1 – Resurrecting a living faith – 2:14-26.

• May 8 – The power of the tongue – 3:1-12.

• May 15 – Learning to be a friend of God – 4:1-10.

• May 22 – Three Commandments of Maturity – 4:11-5:6.

• May 29 – Three Steps to Spiritual Success/Maturity – 5:7-20.

Sunday theme

is 'Follow Me'

Ronald Yager Sr. will speak on the theme, “Follow Me” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service on Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.

Ron has served in the Japan and other countries throughout the world. Presently, he is an Evangelist at Stone Church. John Thumm will preside. Others participating are Howard Harrington, Sarah and Jerry Nieft, Dennis and Amy Sharier and Denise Jensen. Music will be provided by Paulette Votava Resch and Clare Vlahos.

St. Mark's golf

St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence is holding their 12th Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser on April 29 at the Adams Pointe Golf Club in Blue Springs. The shotgun start is at 8 a.m.
