Sandy Hook families settle with Remington

Families of nine victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre agreed Tuesday to a $73 million settlement against the maker of the gun used in the deadly 2012 shooting. The settlement follows several years of litigation with Remington Arms, the maker of the Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle that was used to kill 20 first graders and six teachers at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Prince Andrew to settle sex case

Fallen plane was carrying 4 adults, 4 teens

Four teenagers and four adults returning from a hunting trip were on board a small plane that crashed off the coast of North Carolina over the weekend, authorities announced Tuesday. INDEPENDENCE - Martha Broker, 70 of Independence, MO, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. Martha was born to Chester and Louise (Ficklin) Grantham in Kansas City, MO. August 7, 1951. She graduated from Ft Osage High School in 1969. She met the love of her life, Theodore Broker, while attending Central Missouri State College and the two married on March 2, 1970. They were married for 9 years and had 3 children before his passing in 1979. Martha was involved in many organizations throughout her lifetime including, Job’s Daughters, being selected as Ombudsman for Tidewater Assembly Navy Wives, Order of the Eastern Star, achieving title of Worthy Matron in 1981 and receiving her 50-year pin in 2020. She was also a part of Missouri Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, past president of Parents without Partners, and a Red Hatter. Martha was a member of Blue Springs United Methodist Church and later, Christ United Methodist Church Independence, MO, where she enjoyed fellowship with her Sunday School class, volunteering for food drops, the annual garage sale and other social activities. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, thrifting, playing cards and games and loving on her cat Dahlia. The last months of Martha’s life she suffered from dementia, but still managed to have an impact on many lives as was evidence by the numerous staff at Ignite Medical Resorts who stopped to share stories, offer condolences, and say their goodbyes. Martha is survived by her children Theodore (Lori) Broker II; Kristie (Chad) Elbert; John (Casie) Broker; grandchildren Jordan (Aaron) Acker, Theodore Broker III; Taylor, Brayden, and Brock Elbert; Ethan and Eli Broker; great granddaughter Annalee Acker and her beloved companion (cat) Dahlia. She is preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Broker, parents Chester and Louise Grantham, and brother Robert DeWayne Grantham. The family will receive friends Friday evening, February 18, 2022 from 6-8 pm at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Funeral service and burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Laurie, MO at a later date. Samuel Alva Milholland, 79, passed away on February 8, 2022 in Port Charlotte, FL. He was born on November 29, 1942, in Kansas City, MO. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Anna Mae (Haynie) Milholland. He is survived by the love of his life of 38 years, Gayle Lohmeyer of Overland Park, KS and his three children, Joanna Milholland of Pittsburgh, PA, John (Kelli) Milholland of Cameron, MO, and Jill (Kevin) Carter of Independence, MO, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Barbara (Gerhardt) Miller

LEE’S SUMMIT - Barbara (Gerhardt) Miller, age 90, of Lee’s Summit, MO, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at the Wilshire Lakewood nursing home. Barbara was born October 18th, 1931, to Andrew and Ovidia Gerhardt in Oak Park, Illinois.

Blue Springs tabs Paulsen for football post

Jed Paulsen, a member of the Blue Springs High School football coaching staff the past six years, has been named the new head coach, following David White’s resignation last week. White was named head coach in 2020 after longtime coach Kelly Donohoe announced that he was retiring from Blue Springs and taking the job as head coach at Rockhurst High School.
