Ex-Kansas City officer asks to remain free during appeal

KANSAS CITY – A former Kansas City police detective is asking to remain free on bond while his conviction in the shooting death of a Black man is appealed. Eric DeValkenaere, 43, is scheduled to be sentenced March 4 for second-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the December 2019 death of Cameron Lamb.

Slanderous mailer embodies what’s wrong with local politics

Larry Blick, Independence To the editor: Who is so afraid of Rory Rowland’s proposals for ethics reform, contribution limits and term limits for the mayor that they will sponsor a scurrilous mailer full of lies and slander? I know Rory Rowland to be a person of integrity, honesty and high moral standards. Dark money used for scurrilous, slanderous mailers at the last minute is what is wrong with our city politics.

Superintendent right to require masks in classrooms

Michele McIntosh, MD To the editor: Thanks to superintendent Dale Herl of the Independence School District for reinstating a mask mandate to protect the children and staff of Independence schools in spite of the threat of a lawsuit by Attorney General Eric Schmitt. The district comes through again for the kids instead of bowing to political pressure.
