Taliban reopen universities for Afghan women

ISLAMABAD – The Taliban on Wednesday said they have reopened public universities for women students in six of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces, a move marking a major concession to international demands by the country’s new rulers.

‘A special moment’

Grain Valley junior Grace Slaughter had an idea something was going on when her younger sister and their mom were “whispering” early Monday morning. “My sister Olivia was talking with my mom this morning about not wanting to go to freshman orientation,” said Slaughter, who entered the Eagles’ Suburban Middle Six Conference game at William Chrisman needing just six points to break Laura Reeves’ career school scoring record of 1,760 points.

Area braces for expected heavy snow

The National Weather Service says the total snowfall expected Tuesday and Wednesday in Eastern Jackson County is four to 10 inches. The state says the storm could create “extremely hazardous driving conditions” across most of Missouri.

Candidate Rowland rejects claims in mailer

Independence mayoral candidate Rory Rowland says he rejects the claims made in anonymous flyer that circulated in the city this past weekend. The campaign flyer, which does not include a funding disclosure – in violation of Missouri Ethics Commission election rules – says to “Reject Rory Rowland” because he is a “Jefferson City insider who wants to put our city up for sale to the highest bidder,” with an image of Independence City Hall.

Arrest made in fatal Amtrak shooting

Police arrested a man believed to be connected to last month's fatal shooting aboard an Amtrak train in Lee's Summit. That followed a standoff Monday at a Kansas City apartment complex.

Washburn University announces graduates Three local students graduated from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas at the end of the fall, 2021 semester. They are Virginia Berg of Blue Springs, Kimberly Caviness of Independence, and Ysabella Hartnett of Blue Springs.
