AREA COVID-19 TESTING SITES

University Health: Regular testing hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Testing is available at both sites – the Lakewood campus at 7900 Lee’s Summit Road, Kansas City, and the Hospital Hill site at 2211 Charlotte, Kansas City.

Four hurt in wreck at Noland and Lynn Court

Four people were hurt – two of them hospitalized – when the driver of a pickup being chased by police went into oncoming traffic at one of the busiest intersections in Independence. Independence police say it started about 2 p.m.

Unemployment claims hit highest mark in 3 months

WASHINGTON – The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose to the highest level in three months as the fast-spreading omicron variant continued to disrupt the job market. Jobless claims rose for the third straight week – by 55,000 to 286,000, highest since mid-October, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

Progress made in pig organ study

Doctors at the University of Alabama, Birmingham implanted two pig kidneys into a brain-dead person in September, a step toward trying the procedure in a person. The surgery was not made public until Thursday when the results were published in a scientific paper.

MEXICO CITY – Decades ago, Mexican activists drove women into the United States to terminate their pregnancies at clinics. Now it’s women in the U.S. who are facing more challenges to accessing abortion services and again Mexican activists are stepping up to offer support.
