‘That’s Korey’

Few people inside Van Horn High School saw Korey Messick’s classiest performance Tuesday night. The Falcons claimed a 73-43 nonconference home victory over Oak Grove, in which Messick played less than a half and scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and combined with Brycen Dean to allow just 10 Panther points in the paint.

Heat source suspected in death

IRONTON – Investigators are working to determine what killed a family of four in southeast Missouri but they do not believe foul play was involved. Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home at Lake Killarney on Tuesday after a man, woman and two children were found unresponsive.

Missouri 2022 legislative session begins

COLUMBIA – Missouri’s Republicanled Legislature kicked off the 2022 annual session Wednesday amid a coronavirus surge and during an election year. Seating in House hearing rooms and the chamber is limited to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Dennis Levi Overbay

INDEPENDENCE, MO - Dennis Levi Overbay, 88, of Independence, Missouri passed away on January 2, 2022. Dennis was born March 13, 1933 at home, in the Northeast Kansas City, Missouri to Dennis Patrick and Beulah Mae Overbay (Bookout). He attended James Elementary and Northeast Senior High School, graduating in 1951. It was there he met his future wife of 69 years, Shirley May Phillips. They were married at Bethany Baptist Church December 6th 1952. Shortly after their marriage he was drafted into the Army in 1953 and served for 3 years in Korea, Japan and Guam. After coming home, Dennis studied and graduated from Rockhurst College, while still working evenings at Sears Roebuck. During this time, Dennis and Shirley were blessed with four children; Michael Dennis, Jill Ann, Phillip Eugene, and Karen Sue. Dennis retired after 41 year of service to Sears.

Council rejects ‘absurd’ power plant offer

The investment firm Titan Fish and owner Joe Campbell offered to end a lawsuit against the city of Independence and two City Council members if the city handed over the shuttered Blue Valley power plant to Titan Fish, granted tax abatement and leased back portions of the power plant land.
