Drawing the lines

The only solution offered Monday for the disagreement over Jackson County’s districts in the Missouri House would end the use of Troost Avenue as a boundary for seats in western Kansas City. While the major road was once a useful boundary to design districts likely to be represented by Black Missourians, Kansas City resident Michael Smith said, it no longer is a practical line and using it results in districts that are narrow east-to-west and long north-to-south.

Ruby Ruth McNeely

INDEPENDENCE - Ruby McNeely, of Independence, Missouri, 100 years of age, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2021. Ruby was born June 1, 1921 in Odessa, Missouri to Theodore & Stella Love. She grew up in Odessa and graduated from Odessa High School class of 1939. She worked in the business office at Independence Regional Health Center for 19 years until she retired. Ruby is survived by 1 sister, Frances Shurmatine, of Wellington, MO; 8 grandchildren, Dana Ellis, Lana Heideman, Cherie Wilson, Michael O’Dell, James Brackenbury; 12 great grandchildren; and her dear family, Mike, Michael Renea and Kacee Mitchell. She is preceded in death by her husband, William McNeely; daughter, Jana Brackenbury; son, David O’Dell; dear niece and adopted daughter, Lois Mitchell; sisters, Ethel Westerburg, Norine Simmerman, Louise Barker; a grandson and granddaughter. A visitation will be held between the hours of 9-10 am, Friday, January 7, 2022 with a funeral service to follow at 10 am, both to take place at Carson Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052. Ruby will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens, Independence, Missouri.

BLUE SPRINGS - William“Bill” Starkey, 86, Blue Springs, MO passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO following a lengthy illness. Bill was born September 8, 1935 in Schell City, MO to Chester A. and Martha Ann (Alexander) Starkey. He was united in marriage to Glennise E. Germann on March 12, 1955 in Harwood, MO and she survives of the home.

City tightens regulations for shopping carts
