Missouri bill mimics Texas’ scheme to attack abortion rights

Even as the U.S. Supreme Court ponders what to do with Texas’ restrictive new anti-abortion-rights law, a Missouri legislator has filed a bill that would mimic it here – complete with an enforcement mechanism that tries to circumvent constitutional issues by inviting random private citizens to sue abortion providers at will. That mechanism, which even conservative Chief Justice John Roberts has derided as “a bounty hunting scheme,” would set a dangerous precedent on issues far beyond abortion.

Perpetual stress is taking a toll on all of us

The area is seeing its highest COVID-19 case rates since early August, the Jackson County Health Department says, and cases have risen each week since the end of October. One Centers for Disease Control and Prevention metric for high community transmission is 100 or more new cases per 100,000 population in the past seven days.

Inaccurate death certificates across the country hide the true toll of COVID-19

In Cape Girardeau County, the coroner hasn’t pronounced a single person dead of COVID-19 in 2021. Wavis Jordan, a Republican who was elected last year to serve as coroner of the 80,000-person county, says his office “doesn’t do COVID deaths.” He does not investigate deaths himself, and requires families to provide proof of a positive COVID-19 test before including it on a death certificate.
