LGBT asylum seekers, a new shot at life

WORCESTER, Mass. – The church volunteers assembled furniture and hung decorations in the newly renovated apartment building. They laid out nearly every necessity, down to the bath towels, bed linens, cooking supplies and televisions. h Over Thanksgiving weekend, the first residents of the home in Worcester, Massachusetts moved in: three gay men seeking asylum in the U.S. h “I don’t even have the words,” said Alain Spyke, 26, who fled Jamaica after being continually harassed and threatened by a local gang for being gay. “To come into this country and have a safe space to escape all the hardships and trauma? Not everyone has that opportunity.”

Independence students send Christmas greetings

If they haven’t already, hundreds of people in the area will soon receive a card with a heartfelt holiday wish, courtesy of Independence School District students. Student council members from Sycamore Hills Elementary crafted more than 30 cards for patients at Children’s Mercy hospital, and students at Three Trails Elementary wrote 352 cards to various people who serve the community in their occupations.

Herbert, Eagles stave off Odessa

Grain Valley boys basketball coach Andy Herbert walked out of the locker room sporting a wry grin Monday. “Well, everything we did tonight defensively was geared to stop Boston Sanders, so I guess we’ll scrap that,” Herbert quipped after the Odessa senior guard scored 39 points in a non-conference game that his Eagles won 58-55 thanks to some clutch free throws and long-distance shooting by his son Owen, who scored a team-high 21 points.

Library branches close for the holidays

• Mid-Continent Public Library branches will be closed all day on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. The libraries will also close early, at 5 p.m., on New Year’s Eve and will remail closed throughout New Year’s Day.
