US hits Chinese entities with more sanctions

WASHINGTON – The Biden administration said Thursday it is imposing new sanctions on several Chinese biotech and surveillance companies and government entities for actions in Xinjiang province, the latest step against Beijing over human rights abuses of Uyghur Muslims in the country’s western region.

Rules on lead in water rewritten

WASHINGTON – The Environmental Protection Agency is taking steps to tighten rules for allowable levels of lead in drinking water, as the Biden administration looks to replace all of the nation’s lead service lines using new funds from the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Army says 98% met vaccine deadline

WASHINGTON – Army officials said Thursday that 98% of active duty personnel received at least one dose of the mandatory coronavirus vaccine as of this week’s deadline for the shots, but that more than 3,800 soldiers refused and could start being removed from the military next month.

Judge clears 1955 court record of civil rights pioneer Colvin BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A judge approved a request to wipe clean the court record of a Black woman who was arrested for refusing to move to the back of a segregated Alabama bus in 1955, months before Rosa Parks gained fame for doing the same.

County, school tax dispute exceeds $1 million

Jackson County will not withhold more than $1.1 million in property tax payments to the Independence School District while a dispute between the two parties remains in court. The school district sued the county last month to prevent the county from withholding tax payments that would make up for a refund to Unilever.
