INDEPENDENCE, MO - Hazel Ruth Gumm, 88 of Independence, MO passed away Monday, December 13, 2021 at Ignite Medical Resort in Blue Springs, MO. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 18, 2021 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055 with burial to follow in Blue Springs Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m., until service time Saturday at the chapel. Donation may be made in her name to the Glenview Baptist Church, 3101 S. Shrank Rd., Independence, MO 64055. Hazel was born February 18, 1933 in Charleston, AR to Frank and Delphene (Holt) King and has been a longtime area resident. She had worked as a cashier for several years at Walgreen’s Pharmacy as well as Kmart. She enjoyed baking sewing and shopping and was a longtime member of the Glenview Baptist Church. She is survived by; a son, 7 grandchildren, Shane, Mandi, Ryan, Holly, Alisa, Nathan and Jordan and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, a sister and a daughter, Gayla Johnson in 1996. Hazel will always be remembered as a strong woman with a vibrant sense of humor and a knack for conversation! She had an enormous amount of love and pride for her family, and an abundant love of Christ. Beverly Jo Holt Shelton

Beverly Jo Holt Shelton passed away Saturday, December 11th, 2021, at the age of 96. She was born July 1, 1925 in Maryville, Missouri, the daughter of Joe and Garland Holt. She was a graduate of Quitman High School and Northwest Missouri State University. She married her lifelong friend and the love of her life, Edward Job Shelton, on May 26, 1946. She was a public school music teacher and private piano teacher for many years and a “professional volunteer” until her death. She was active in the McCoy Elementary School PTA while her children were there. She was a registered adult Girl Scout for 50+ years, serving as troop leader, day camp staff member and director, secretary and public relations director for the Pioneer Trails Girl Scout Council. She and her family hosted a Girl Scout Guide from Pakistan for a week in 1965. She was honored as a Girl Scout Hidden Heroine and received the Council’s highest award, the Girl Scout Thanks Badge.

Discovery of neighbor’s past shocks new friend

Dear Abby: I recently learned my neighbor shot and killed her two young kids (14 and 2) more than 20 years ago and served only half of her prison sentence – six years. The newspaper said she called the police herself, confessed and was arrested and incarcerated.
