Sandra Lee (Hodson Farris) Morris

INDEPENDENCE - Sandra Lee (Hodson Farris) Morris passed away on December 7, 2021 at Jackson Creek Memory Care facility in Independence, Mo. Sandy was born at Research Hospital in KCMO on May 24, 1937, to Harold & Clara Hodson. She graduated from Central High School. She married John A Farris in 1958 and they had three children, David, Carla, and Dennis. She was widowed in 1970. In 1971, she married William G Morris, who had also been widowed with two children, Mary and William Jr. Together they raised the 5 children in Kansas City, Mo.

Georgia Rose Towers

Georgia Rose Towers was born in Glendale, CA on Sept 20th, 1936 to Ace and Mildred Dodge. She was an Evangelist in the Community of Christ East 39th St congregation and previously served as Pastor and counselor to the District President in her church in San Diego, CA. She volunteered at Centerpoint Hospital for over 10 years as the office coordinator of Volunteers and Chaplains. She passed on December 3, 2021 after having family in attendance throughout the day. A photo tribute and memorial service will be conducted at the E. 39th St. Community of Christ church, 15006 E 39th St. S., Independence, MO on Friday, December 10, 2021, starting at 1 PM - memorial at 2 PM. Phyllis Jacqueline Boyd

BLUE SPRINGS - Phyllis Jacqueline Boyd (née Nave), 80, of Blue Springs, passed away December 2nd at her Truman Lake cabin near Warsaw, MO. She was born November 15th, 1941 to Chris and Norma Nave in Independence, MO. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 52 years, John Joseph Boyd of Marshall, MO Phyllis graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1959, and earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Central Missouri State University. She worked for Western Electric in Lee’s Summit prior to her marriage in 1967 and the birth of their first son John II in 1968. In 1970 they moved to Blue Springs, and in 1971 son James was born, followed by daughter Shawna in 1976. Phyllis was a dedicated outdoors woman who loved camping, boating, fishing, and water-skiing. She was also an avid bowler and frequent volunteer at her children’s schools. The family spent summers and hunting seasons at family property at the Lake of the Ozarks, and once they were empty-nested, John and Phyllis purchased their own campsite at Truman Lake to spend their retirement years relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet of lake life. In recent years, she spent much of her time volunteering with the Missouri Department of Conservation at Burr Oak Woods and at events across the state. Much of her volunteer time was spent teaching outdoors skills to youth. Phyllis earned multiple awards for her volunteer work; she received her 1000-hour award in 2008 and she continued her volunteer work until her death. She is survived by three siblings, Chris Nave Jr. and spouse Jody Nave of Independence, MO; George Nave and spouse Jan Nave of Wentzville, MO; and Vicki Nave of Independence, MO; and her children: John Boyd II and grandchildren Robert and Lukas Boyd; James Boyd and spouse Patricia Boyd; and Shawna Ferguson, spouse Justin Ferguson, and grandchildren Ian and Leah Ferguson. Cremation is planned with a Celebration Gathering to be held on Friday, December 10th, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO. State may expand health coverage for new moms

Faced with more than a year’s delay from the state social services department on implementing extended mental health care for new moms, a bipartisan effort now aims to expand healthcare coverage more broadly for low-income pregnant women.

IPD adds Blue River partnership for police recruits

To expand its recruiting and training efforts, the Independence Police Department will partner with Metropolitan Community College-Blue River in addition to the Kansas City Regional Police Academy. While the City Council and voters have recently approved measures to steer some additional funds toward police personnel and equipment – including recruiting incentives, retention bonuses and pay raises – acting Chief of Police Ken Jarnagin said this is a move made almost independent of that support.

Pfizer: Boosters strongly protect against omicron

Pfizer said Wednesday that a booster of its COVID-19 vaccine may offer important protection against the new omicron variant even though the initial two doses appear significantly less effective. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said that while two doses may not be strong enough to prevent infection, lab tests showed a booster increased by 25-fold people’s levels of antibodies capable of fighting off omicron.

Strickland’s case shows why Missouri’s compensation law needs changes

The exoneration of Kevin Strickland, who spent almost 43 years in prison for murders he didn’t commit, has spotlighted the cruel cynicism of Missouri’s political leadership, with both the governor and attorney general refusing to correct this injustice due to political considerations. It’s also spotlighting an injustice in Missouri law, which doesn’t allow compensation to be paid for wrongly imprisoned people unless DNA evidence is part of their exoneration.
