Freshman Eli Herbert breaks out in Grain Valley basketball win

Grain Valley senior forward Rhylan Alcanter had just spent 32 minutes battling Korey Messick, his Van Horn counterpart, under the basket, in the paint and on the baselines. Alcanter finished with 15 points, including a layup and free throw that gave the Eagles a 47-46 lead with 3:16 left, one that they wouldn’t relinquish on the way to a 6055 home victory Tuesday.

1. Santa Skate at Cable Dahmer Arena: 12 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, 19100 East Valley View Parkway, Independence. There will be a craft and vendor fair, kids’ crafts, a cookie decorating event, games and prizes, a hot cocoa bar, time with Santa, and ice skating.

Taylor’s buzzer beater lifts Bears

Trey Taylor not only led the William Chrisman boys basketball team in scoring Tuesday, but he hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Taylor’s trey as time expired in overtime lifted the Bears to a defensive-minded 41-38 victory over host Kearney Tuesday.
