Missouri running a record budget surplus

For the first time in its history, the only real limit on what Missouri can buy on a cash-and-carry basis is the imagination of the people spending the money. The state treasury is bulging with more than $6 billion in surplus cash, the result of 28 months of double-digit revenue growth and federal payments tied to COVID-19 relief and recovery.

The newest COVID boosters, known as the bivalent boosters, are available. The Pfizer and Moderna bivalent boosters are available for certain age ranges. These bivalent boosters target the most recent COVID Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5. The CDC recommends bivalent boosters at this time.

Four-day school week is focus of community meeting

The Independence School District will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday about a possible four-day school instructional week. The meeting at William Chrisman High School’s auditorium is open to the public, Scheduled speakers include ISD Superintendent Dale Herl, Gregg Klinginsmith, superintendent of the Warren County School District, and Missouri State University professor Jon Turner. The district says there will be an opportunity to submit questions.

COVID stays low, RSV still a worry

For two months now, Jackson County has remained at the “low” level of COVID-19 community transmission, based on federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standards, but hospitals continue to see high numbers of other respiratory illnesses cases such as the flu and the virus commonly known as RSV.
