Deputy police chief alleges age discrimination

The former interim police chief in Independence, who remains deputy chief, has sued the city, claiming age discrimination and a hostile work environment. Ken Jarnagin, 54, was placed on administrative leave in February when an investigation into police overtime construction work started.

Voters speak clearly on marijuana

The public has spoken, first by the collection of a sufficient number of signatures to get it on the ballot, and second by voting to amend the state Constitution to permit possession and personal use of marijuana and marijuana- infused edibles and smokables for personal recreational use.

Happy birthday (to me) and many happy returns

When I woke up this morning and hobbled into the bathroom my body mumbled, “you’re old,” while my mind said, “I don’t want to be.” If I eat right, exercise and lose weight I could be good to go for another couple decades, or I could eat chocolate chip cookies, click my heels three times and wish on a falling star. Sixty-two years ago, my parents were trying to get over the shock they were having another baby.

Rotary honors two at Truman

Seniors Jared Esquivel Olivas and Cathryne Maxey have been selected as the Rotary Students of the Month at Truman High School. Jared has participated in soccer at Truman High School for three years.
