Supreme Court backs coach in praying on field after games

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Monday that a high school football coach who sought to kneel and pray on the field after games was protected by the Constitution, a decision that opponents said would open the door to “much more coercive prayer” in public schools.

Fern Louise Cary, 68, of Independence, Mo. passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022 at St. Luke’s East hospital in Lee’s Summit, Mo. A celebration gathering and viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday evening, June 29, 2022 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Fern was born October 24, 1953 in Kansas City, Mo. to Olaf Frank and Alberta Fern (Hibbs) Reilley and has been a lifelong area resident graduating from Van Horn High School in 1971. She had worked for a number of years from St. Luke’s Health Systems as a medical transcriptionist before she retired in September of 2020. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery and spending time with her family. She devoted these last several years to helping take care of her grandchildren who she loved dearly. She found her true love, Rickey Ray Cary, in 2007 and enjoyed their time together until his passing in 2012. She is survived by; her daughter, Jennifer Talato and husband John of Independence; four grandchildren, Noah, Mahlea, Aryana and Israel all of the home and many extended family and friends.
