Man, 71, held in Alabama church shooting

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (AP) — A 71-year-old man fatally shot two elderly people and wounded a third with a handgun during a potluck dinner at an Alabama church where he occasionally attended services, police said Friday.

(AP) — Deep-seated conspiracy theories about the security of voting machines erupted into heated, angry and at times threatening outbursts Friday as New Mexico counties decided whether to certify results from their recent primary, underscoring the depths of an election crisis that officials fear is foreshadowing darker times ahead for the nation’s democracy.

ANAHEIM, California (AP) — The Southern Baptist Convention voted overwhelmingly this week to create a way to track pastors and other church workers credibly accused of sex abuse and launch a new task force to oversee further reforms in the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

Guilty plea in $1 million worth of stolen catalytic converters SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man pleaded guilty Thursday to participating in a scheme that transported tens of thousands of stolen catalytic converters across state lines as part of a multi-million business.

Marjorie A. Hammond

Marjorie a. Hammond was born on July 2, 1932 in Sullivan, Ill. to Elmer H. Wood and Marjorie W. Wood. Marjorie grew up in Sullivan and later went to the University of Illinois. She received her BS from the University of Illinois. After graduation she worked in St. Louis, Mo. for three years. At that point Marjorie decided to make a career change and become a teacher. She attended UMKC and received her MS there. She taught 3rd grade one year in the Kansas City Missouri School District. Marjorie then changed to the Independence School District where she taught for 27 years. Marjorie taught at Noland and Santa Fe Trail Schools.

Patricia R. “Patty” Johnson passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. She was 87. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 27 at Mount Washington Cemetery in Independence, Mo.
