Independence charter needs action sooner, not later

It is disappointing to see the Independence City Council take a step back on naming a group to recommend changes in the City Charter, the city’s basic governing document. Such a group should look at any number of fundamental questions, including the future of Independence Power & Light and the duties of the recently resurrected city Health Department.

Biden gets it right in backing Taiwan

President Joe Biden’s remark Monday about a U.S. military response should China invade Taiwan was no gaffe and didn’t deserve to be walked back by his aides. Biden knew exactly what he was saying. He stated it three different ways at a news conference as Japan’s prime minister stood beside him. Despite all his previous malaprops and fumbled syntax, in this case, Biden said exactly what needed to be said, and what the world needed to hear.

Timothy Cox attains rank of Eagle Scout

Timothy Cox, son of Joseph and Charlotta Cox, was honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor at Susquehanna Baptist Church in Independence. Timothy is a senior at Fort Osage High School, where he participates in the Career and Technology Center construction program.

In poll, Supreme Court slips

WASHINGTON (AP) — Public approval of the Supreme Court has fallen following the leak of a draft opinion that would overturn the Roe v. Wade decision guaranteeing abortion rights nationwide, according to a poll.
