A new look for a playground, and memories are honored

The equipment for Sam and Lindsey’s Playground needed to be replaced due to wear and tear. A remodeling project has given Jackson County Parks + Rec a chance to keep the namesakes’ story alive and to reimagine the small playground at the Hartman-Heritage Trailhead on the Little Blue Trace Trail off Jackson Drive in southeast Independence.

Bears unload on Falcons

A big four-run first inning, fueled by cleanup hitter Nate Campos’ three-run double, paved the way for a productive 14-4 win for the host William Chrisman Bears. “I saw the bases loaded and wanted to unload them,” a grinning Campos said after the Bears used nine hits to top crosstown rival Van Horn and make a winner of starter Alex Smith Thursday.

A chance to aid Ukrainian refugees

President Biden announced last week that another $800 million in military aid would be sent to Ukraine to help in the fight against invading Russian forces, and he asked for more this week. The president remarked that his actions “sent an unmistakable message to Putin: He will never succeed in dominating and occupying all of Ukraine.”

Michael (Mikie) Thomas Franklin, Jr. born 4/27/93, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family and close friends at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City on the morning of 4/22/2022. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael T. Franklin, Sr., his grandparents Orville and Oma Franklin. He is survived by his mother and stepfather Angela (Hayes) and Bryan Cady of Blue Springs, his brothers Jacob D. Franklin, Julian, Elias and Sullivan Cady, his sisters Justine Franklin and Adrienne Cady, and his uncle Richard Hayes of Broken Arrow, Ok.
