Players and staff from the Sporting Kansas City soccer team, as well as member of the Greater Kansas City Community Gardens more than a dozen volunteers total worked with some regular gardeners Tuesday afternoon to spruce up the Sugar Creek Community Garden. The effort by Sporting KC is part of Major League Soccer’s annual Greener Goals of Service Week. Volunteers helped build and fill two new raised beds for the Sugar Creek garden, as well as enhance its existing raised beds. Sugar Creek’s Community Garden has been used for nine years now, co-director Sandy Mikulich said, and has a similar number of regular gardeners renting spots. The city donates the land on Kentucky Avenue just east of Sterling Avenue, Mikulich said, and the gardeners maintain it. [MIKE GENET/THE EXAMINER]
