Lowell Eugene “Gene” Cable

Our community recently lost another member of The Greatest Generation. Lowell Eugene (Gene) Cable passed away April 14, 2022, at the age of 96. Gene was born in Eagleville, Missouri on February 10, 1926, on a farm owned by his parents Roy and Minnie Cable. He and his four siblings, Thelma, Garland, Gladys and Gale grew up during the depression making ends meet in rural Missouri. After attending Gillham City High school and serving as their FFA club president, Gene joined the Army Air Corp and served his country during WWII for 2 years. Taking advantage of the GI Bill, and knowing the importance of education, Gene attended and graduated from Missouri University in Columbia. It was in Columbia where he started selling cars and met his life-long love, Joanne Gillenwater. Gene and Joanne were married in 1949 and recently celebrated 72 years of love and dedication to each other. Gene’s work ethic prevailed throughout his successful career in the automotive business. Settling in Independence in 1956 with the purchase of a Chevrolet dealership, he became involved in many civic and business activities. His leadership and intellectual contributions to local organizations are too many to list but led to respect and admiration from many. His passions in life were family, work, golf and travel. Many friendships were cultivated through golf, many dedicated associates and employees through his work, and much love and admiration from his family. He shared his financial success with many charities in the area which set a wonderful example of caring and sharing to the future generations of his family. Joanne was always by his side as his confidant, advisor and support. His family includes wife, Joanne (Gillenwater) Cable, son Steve Cable (Renee), daughter Cindy Cavanah (Marty), grandchildren Tom Cable, Anne Bencker (Brian), David Cavanah, Katie Stevens (Brad). There are 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 N. Pleasant St., Independence, MO 64050, with burial to follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery. Visitation from 1:00 p.m. until service time Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Truman Heartland Community Foundation, the Gene and Joanne Cable Scholarship Fund or to Village Hospice a John Knox Village Service. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.speakschapel.com (Arrangements: Speaks Suburban Chapel (816) 373-3600)

Hospital staff members find innovative solutions

If necessity is the mother of invention, then COVID led to two inventions and ultimately a benefit going forward for University Health Lakewood patients. When pandemic lockdowns kept long-term care residents from getting to their regular therapy sessions, therapists at UH-Lakewood (formerly Truman Medical Center-Lakewood) improvised twice to provide those residents some suitable therapy space.

Some magic in a story not well told

We’re now midway through the five-movie “Fantastic Beasts” series, a sort of prequel/cousin to the Harry Potter world created by J.K. Rowling, and the most enthusiasm I can muster is that it’s all lovely to look at. Set in a magical version of the 1930s, David Yates’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” is full of glorious coats (Colleen Atwood’s costumes are, as always, perfection) and snow-covered landscapes and cozy train cars. And the magic, a lovely supporting character in the story, provides perpetual delight: teapots pouring themselves, fantastical creatures such as a bird that puffs up like a balloon, people appearing and disappearing with the dramatic flick of a wand.

‘Stomach flu’ on the rise again in U.S.

While COVID-19 cases continue to drop in the U.S., outbreaks of another virus — the stomach flu — are ramping up, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. This comes amid easing virus restrictions nationwide.

Jaguars take Sheridan Cup

The spirits were high and the scoring was low in the ninth annual Sheridan Cup-Cancer Battler soccer match between visiting Blue Springs and the host Blue Springs South Jaguars. The annual event, which raises funds and awareness for cancer research in the memory of late Blue Springs South soccer coach Dave Sheridan, saw a late goal by the Jaguars senior Khaliana Garrett provide all the offense South goalie Siman Loethen needed as coach Todd Findley’s team ended a three-game losing streak with the hard-fought 1-0 victory.
