Grain Valley opens tourney with victory

The Grain Valley baseball team got its appearance in the Columbia Hickman Tournament off to a good start. The Eagles grabbed an early 5-0 lead and held on for a 6-4 victory over the host Hickman Kewpies Friday.

For nearly a decade, the annual Bowls for Souls at Blue Springs South High School had a close association with basketball and chili. The event featured an art show at which people could buy a ceramic bowl created by a South art student, eat a chili dinner and watch the Jaguars play a basketball game.

Fort’s McIntyre saves best for last

While Dawn McIntyre was enjoying lunch Wednesday afternoon in the Fort Osage High School cafeteria, the senior track and field standout experienced a revelation that struck like a bolt of lightning. “I’m having lunch and not really thinking about anything, when all of a sudden I realize that tonight’s track meet was going to be the last time I would ever compete on our home track,” said McIntyre, who helped the Indians tie Blue Springs for first place in the annual Fort Osage Invitational Wednesday.

Wanda “Charlene” Crabtree

Wanda “Charlene” Crabtree, 87 of Independence, Mo passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 18, 2022, at St. Mark Catholic Church 3600 S. Lees Summit Rd., Independence, MO 64055 with private entombment to follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. There will be a rosary recited at 10:00 a.m., Monday at the church followed by a brief visitation prior to the service at the church. Donations may be made in her name to The American Cancer Society. Charlene was born August 30, 1934, in Iola, KS to Lawrence and Alma (Harmony) Gorden and has been a longtime area resident. She was a beloved wife, mother and homemaker who enjoyed bowling, playing bunko, going to the casinos and traveling with friends. She was a very tidy homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her 2 granddaughters. She was a very active and longtime member of St. Mark Catholic Church where she served on the Altar Society and various other positions. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Crabtree of Independence, MO; a son, Tim Crabtree and wife Cari of Bates City, MO and 2 granddaughters, Kyra Crabtree of Kansas City, MO and Nina Crabtree of Bates City, MO.
