Gerrymandering is more than a game. It hurts democracy.
It’s hard to know when the congressional redistricting drama playing out in the Missouri Senate will end. A group of senators with a hard ideological edge is filibustering to block a partisan, gerrymandered map with six safe Republican seats in the U.S. House Representatives along with two safely Democratic seats.

Carl Dean Harber, 79, of Odessa, Missouri passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m.
Isaac Newton Ketchum, Jr.
Isaac Newton Ketchum, Jr. was born on October 6, 1941 in Independence, MO to Isaac Newton Sr. and Sarah Helena. He had one half-brother Gale Oliver and two sisters, Sarah Mae and Ruby Elizabeth. After his father died in 1952, he decided that if something broke, he was going to learn how to fix it and became a jack of all trades. After he graduated from William Chrisman High School, he began working at a filling station as a mechanic. At age 22 he was drafted by the Army and served as an airframe repairman in Panama. When he returned, he met and married Brenda Jane and to this union came a daughter, Debra Lynn. He went on to work as a construction electrician for Armco Steel, met and married Sharon Kay and gave birth to a daughter Kimberly Dawn. He was an avid gardener and always had fresh onions and tomatoes to share. As he neared retirement, he met and married Janice Lynette, traveled extensively and worked as a deacon for The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he was always first to arrive and last to leave. Isaac always made sure that elderly members had rides. Isaac died at age 80 at the Hospice House in Kansas City, MO from cholangiocarcinoma.
Martha Louise “Marti” Kammert
Martha Louise “Marti” Kammert of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2022. She was 90 years old. Marti was born on June 6, 1931, in Independence, Missouri, the daughter of Charles W. and Ethel F. (Knight) Heck. Marti graduated from Northeast High School. At 16 Marti met her future husband, Jack Kammert. They wed a year later and had 4 children. Marti was a wonderful homemaker and a great cook, as well as being talented in baking, tole painting, cake decorating, and ceramics, including painting and clothing porcelain dolls, and also liked to needlepoint. Marti was a member of the Woods Chapel Methodist Church in Lee’s Summit. She volunteered at KU Cancer Center/Lakewood, St. Luke’s Hospital East, and at one time volunteered as an elementary school nurse. She was most proud of her tenure as an Independence Young Matron for over 56 years, serving two years as their president. Above all else, Marti loved the Lord, along with her dearest husband of 73 plus years, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. Marti is survived by her husband, Jack Kammert, Sr.; children: Kathleen (John) Boyer, Janis (John) Bolfeta, Betsy (Mark) Saunders, Jack (Maribeth) Kammert, Jr.; grandchildren: Christopher (Penny) Smith, Megan (Charlie) Wehner, Heather (James) Coleman, Ashley and Scott Kammert; great grandchildren: Aiden and Kieran Smith; Colin, Sophia, and, Zoe Wehner; Tessa and Zeth Coleman; and a sister, Charlieann Douthit. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ethel Heck; and sisters, Jane and Betty. A visitation will be held Friday, March 11, 2022, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St, Independence, Missouri 64055. Family will greet guests between the hours of 5-7pm. Service to take place Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 10am also to be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Marti will be laid to rest following her service. Interment will be held at Mt.
