Mayo Clinic expert offers tips on how to keep joints healthy as you age

ROCHESTER, Minn. — For joints to work well, they need cartilage, a slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones, acts like a shock absorber, and helps joints move smoothly. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon, says many people lose cartilage as they age, but it does not mean that joint replacement is inevitable. Five not-so-scary things to do this weekend

1. 74th Annual Independence Halloween Parade: 10 to noon., Oct. 29. Several thousand spectators usually attend this free community event. There will be floats, school marching bands, community organizations, dance studios, fire trucks, emergency vehicles, tractors, classic cars and costumes. The parade begins on Walnut Avenue near Pleasant Street, runs through the Square and concludes at McCoy Park. Grain Valley’s First Downtown Spooktacular: Friday, Oct. 28, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event begins at 5:45 p.m. as witches and wizards in costume will gather in Armstrong Park to walk to downtown. The Halloween stage downtown will be ready to declare the winners of the jack-o-lantern carving contest and the window decorating contest. Then the Halloween Hollow will entertain with the Spooky Cemetery, Haunted Voodoo Shack, and the Coffin Candy Grab, and candy collecting.
