“The Unfolding,” by A.M. Homes (Viking) If you ever wondered who was behind the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, pick up a copy of A.M. Homes’ new novel, “The Unfolding.” The book, Homes’ 13th and her first novel in a decade, imagines what might have happened if a powerful cabal of wealthy, white, Republican men, horrified by the thought of a Black man in the White House conspired to undo the 2008 election of Barack Obama and restore America to their nostalgic view of the way things used to be. It is a strange, scary, often very funny mashup of political thriller and family melodrama, although at nearly 400 pages, it drags a little at the end.

No need for constant stirring with this easy ‘risotto’ recipe

This mock “risotto” takes only 10 minutes to make and doesn’t need constant stirring. Instead of using traditional rice for the risotto, I use orzo, a rice-shaped pasta, and a large nonstick skillet for this quick meal. The orzo has a creamy texture when cooked this way. Using a large, nonstick skillet instead of a saucepan increases the surface area so the orzo cooks faster and doesn’t stick. There’s no need for constant stirring as with a rice-based risotto.

Isn’t grief like a thunderstorm? There are those times the thunder rumbles till you stop your ears, and you are sure it’ll send everything else crashing in a split second. You have no vision of life with clear blue skies, and what was once a haven of rest and dreams is only blackness with dark tornado clouds as far as you can see.
