From The Examiner during the week of May 22-27, 1972: “STUDENT BURNED DIPLOMA IN PROTEST OF ‘SYSTEM’” – Igor Greer, the Van Horn High School student who burned his diploma on the RLDS Auditorium stage Wednesday night, said he did it because he feels “there is something wrong with the end result of the high school education.” Greer said the act, which was planned months in advance, was to protest his opinion that “Teachers expect respect whether they deserve it or not” and because “they treat students like robots.” He said the goal at Van Horn seems to be to prepare students for life “just within the small town of Independence. They teach you enough to get by but don’t offer you enough to make you wonder.” Greer, whose grades ranged from above average to far below at times, said one of his problems was being dropped from a wood shop class; he had been making pipes in which to smoke marijuana.

‘TOP GUN: MAVERICK’ 3 stars (out of 4) MPAA rating: PG-13 (for sequences of intense action and some strong language) Running time: 2:17 How to watch: In theaters It couldn’t outmaneuver the pandemic enemy that delayed its release for two years, but “Top Gun: Maverick” can’t lose, really. It’s a pretty good time, and often a pretty good movie for the nervous blur we’re in right now.
