On proposed electric meter upgrade, Independence stresses employee safety

Independence Power & Light is looking to spend more than $14 million in substation construction and transformer replacement as part of the city’s proposed 2025-26 budget, though another significant project is planned for in the coming years: advanced metering infrastructure, or AMI. The consultant firm DKMT, which last year issued reports about the future of IPL, emphasized how beneficial the remote meter technology can be for the utility and ratepayers.

New leader stepping up for Community of Christ

If approved this weekend during the World Conference in Independence, Stassi Cramm will become the ninth prophet-president of Community of Christ, and the first woman to hold the church’s highest office – a “humbling and rewarding” feeling, she says. Church leaders last year called Cramm, who has served as presiding bishop, to be the successor for Steve Veazey, who has been president for 20 years and announced his retirement more than two years ago, shortly before the 2023 World Conference.
