Luke Davis: The country’s student loan debt crisis needs attention

The Trump administration has announced it will resume collections on defaulted student loan debt. In a statement, Education Secretary Linda McMahon declared, “American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies.” Starting May 5, the Treasury Department began the process of withholding tax refunds, federal salaries and government benefits from approximately 5.3 million borrowers currently in default.

A key Truman decision, desegregating the military in 1948, is on the agenda at a presidential library event

The Truman Library Institute will host a panel discussion next week to note the 75th anniversary of the Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Forces issuing its follow-up report to Truman’s executive order to desegregate the military. The free panel discussion event, “Freedom to Serve,” is at 6:30 p.m.
