Missouri GOP rejects filing fee from candidate over views

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Republican Party on Tuesday rejected a filing fee from a Kansas City-area man who has been criticized in the past for his racist and homophobic views. The party announced on Twitter that it rejected a filing fee from Steve West, who has faced opposition from his own children when he ran for the Missouri House in 2018 and 2020.

Huge Tahoe bear breaks into homes as it eludes capture

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A 500- pound black bear, known by residents as Hank the Tank, has damaged more than 30 properties around Lake Tahoe in an endless quest for a quick meal. The giant bear has eluded capture for more than seven months, said Peter Tira, a spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The bear is responsible for more than 150 incident reports in the region straddling Northern California and Nevada. Tira described the bear as “severely food habituated” and said it has “lost all fear of people.”

Jury to be finalized in Breonna Taylor-related shooting case

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lawyers in the trial of a former Kentucky police officer involved in the deadly narcotics raid that killed Breonna Taylor were to return to court Tuesday to finish an extended jury selection process. The attorneys will winnow down a pool of 48 people to 12 jurors and three alternates for the trial of former officer Brett Hankison, who is charged with wanton endangerment for shooting into the apartment of one of Taylor’s neighbors on the night of the March 2020 raid. Hankison is the only officer charged.
