Area’s high numbers begin to ebb

After more than two months of continuing increases, leading to pandemic highs, new COVID-19 cases in the area have started to decrease. Winter Olympics organizers report 71 new COVID-19 cases

BEIJING — Beijing 2022 organizers reported 71 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, bringing the total to almost 250 cases linked to the Winter Olympics as the opening ceremony nears. According to data released by the local organizing committee on Monday, 28 of the weekend’s cases involved athletes or team officials, while 20 were detected by screening tests inside the “closed-loop system” – the bubble that organizers have created to separate Games participants from normal Chinese society.

Mavericks limp home after 0-3 road trip

The Kansas City Mavericks return home after a disappointing 0-3 road trip to Idaho, following a 9-4 loss Wednesday, 4-1 loss Friday and 3-2 setback on Saturday. With the losses to the Steelheads, the 18-21-1-0 Mavericks now have 37 points and have dropped into sixth place in the ECHL’s Mountain Division, 10 points behind fourth-place Rapid City and two behind fifth-place Allen.
