Preserving Blue Summit's history

Growing up in Independence, Jeff Jewell said he remembers his father telling him one of two areas to avoid was Blue Summit, the unincorporated area about one square mile big between west Independence and Kansas City that has long had a reputation as a rough neighborhood. Jewell, the longtime fire chief and emergency manager of the Inter City Fire District that serves the area, wants to show some of the more endearing stories of the area often known to locals as “Dog Patch.” His idea: a large mural using a wall of the old, cinder-block portion of the fire station between Blue Ridge Boulevard and Stark Avenue.
