Departing Independence city manager sees gains over the years but also challenges ahead

As he prepares to depart Independence next week after nine years as city manager -- bound for the same position in Bloomington, Minnesota -- Zach Walker said he believes the city is in a better place than when he started. That puts him at peace with the move, he said, even if there are some things he wishes transpired differently.

Meals on Wheels marks 50 years of service in Independence

Fifty years and hundreds if not thousands of volunteers later, Meals on Wheels continues to roll in Independence, as the non-profit organization delivers about 800 meals a week to city residents, based out of Trinity Episcopal Church just north of the Square. Board President Joe Gall accepted an invitation to join the board and started volunteering just two years ago.
