Group provides aid for first responders in need

Ten years ago, when colleague Josh Ward fell gravely ill with a flesh-eating bacteria and was placed in a coma, Lee’s Summit Police detective Ronnie Doumitt realized the financial gap that can appear when the lives of first responders and their families get turned upside down due to serious illness or work-related injury. Even if insurance covers medical care, there are still bills to pay and other home-related expenses that can pop up.

Chris Flaig arrived at Heisler-Burns Park in Buckner early Wednesday morning, ready to volunteer and help put together the panels for the Wall That Heals, the traveling three-fourths replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that is on display, free to the public, until 2 p.m. Sunday.
