Independence Police Department faces another lawsuit from former officer; others are settled

A 30-year officer with Independence police claims in a federal lawsuit that Police Chief Adam Dustman and City Manager Zach Walker failed to follow city hiring practices when two officers were promoted two years ago above other more senior officers to deputy chief positions. The employment discrimination suit, filed this week in federal court in Kansas City by police Major Troy Hanenkratt, follows a string of civil suits filed in Jackson County Circuit Court by current or former officers, three of which have been settled for a total of $2.875 million, mostly paid by city insurance.
