On toxic Twitter, big-name users can be a force for good

Elon Musk’s mass layoffs at Twitter last Friday, barely a week after he acquired the company, should serve as an all-but-literal announcement: Whatever assurances he offers to the contrary, he may in fact plan to open the content floodgates to the worst in hate speech and toxic disinformation. Why else would the layoffs include gutting the very personnel whose jobs were to weed out the worst offenders?

We deserve specifics on GOP plans for economy

Recent polls show, as they often tend to, that Americans trust Republicans more than Democrats on economic issues — this despite decades of evidence that GOP economic stewardship has been worse for all but the richest Americans and more prone to increase the deficit. The political mileage the party gets out of the issue is especially baffling because, even as they bash the Biden administration for its economic policies, Republicans are generally avoiding specifics about what they would do differently.

Beware political attacks; be sure to vote

Lois McDonald, Independence To the editor: The strategy of negative political mailings is well understood by political candidates and campaign managers. The purpose is to discredit the opposing candidate by creating questions of integrity or instilling mistrust. Timing is everything. You can count on receiving one or more in the days before an election when the subject of a colorful or comical postcard has little time for rebuttal or to set the record straight.
