I have to admit that this is my favorite article to write each year. It’s not that I don’t thoroughly enjoy writing articles about tax-smart giving and donor-advised funds, because I actually do. But May is the month where I get to introduce you to Truman Heartland Community Foundation’s Toast to Our Towns honorees and share their inspiring stories of philanthropy.
DEAR ABBY: I’m a divorced woman, soon to be 60, who is often haunted by vivid memories of the past. I constantly recall times in my life that I regret or cringe about, and things I wish I would have handled better. They range from being embarrassed at my 7th birthday party to being bullied from the 5th through 8th grades to awkward moments in high school to parenting decisions I wish I’d made differently.
Infant caregivers are finding empty store shelves where baby formula was once stocked. They may be turning to online searches and even alternative solutions, such as making homemade baby formula.
Perhaps this is how it all ends — self-government, self-defense, self-control, liberty, unity, family. Perhaps the fate of the nation is to watch its soul die along with the at least 19 students and two adults shot to death Tuesday at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

DEAR ABBY: I have a gay friend I’ll call “Allen.” We have been close friends for 13 years. Allen has visited me often with his friends from England, and two years ago, when I could finally afford to visit him, he invited me to stay in the home he shares with his boyfriend, “Rupert.” Rupert took an instant dislike to me. He treated me rudely and mocked my American accent the entire time I was there. I let it be and concentrated on the beautiful scenery, the beautiful people I met and my longtime friend.
Dear Doctors: Can you please talk about myasthenia gravis? Our oldest daughter has been diagnosed with it. She’s 33 and lives with her family in another state, but we want to understand what she’s dealing with. I just read about Chinese herbs that can be helpful. Do you know if that’s true?
It is disappointing to see the Independence City Council take a step back on naming a group to recommend changes in the City Charter, the city’s basic governing document. Such a group should look at any number of fundamental questions, including the future of Independence Power & Light and the duties of the recently resurrected city Health Department.
President Joe Biden’s remark Monday about a U.S. military response should China invade Taiwan was no gaffe and didn’t deserve to be walked back by his aides. Biden knew exactly what he was saying. He stated it three different ways at a news conference as Japan’s prime minister stood beside him. Despite all his previous malaprops and fumbled syntax, in this case, Biden said exactly what needed to be said, and what the world needed to hear.
There’s a growing sense of excitement and great cause to celebrate this time of year. Why? One word: Graduation.
