WASHINGTON –The pictures from Ottawa over the last two weeks have defied every American stereotype of Canadians. We think of our northern neighbors as incorrigibly polite, their politics as moderate and their capital city – when we consider it at all – as boring, the Sacramento of the north.
It is hard to understand the Supreme Court’s ruling on Monday to reinstate a congressional district map drawn by the Alabama Legislature as anything other than an effort by the conservative justices to help Republicans in the midterms.
It must be election time, because the political silly season kicked off right on schedule. The misguided shots at Independence City Manager Zach Walker at least superficially arise from legitimate outrage over excessive police overtime that’s come to light in the last week, but they are misguided nonetheless.
Congress passed, and President Biden signed, the American Rescue Plan 10 months ago, creating the most significant infusion of funds for students and local schools in our nation’s history. Nevertheless, the Missouri legislature has yet to move the $1.9 billion to our students who need help overcoming the learning impacts of COVID-19.
Few places have brought out the worst in people during the COVID-19 pandemic more than airplanes. In-flight confrontations have soared over the past two years, and airlines are worried they will impact safety.
OK, look. I have never watched “Billions,” “Game of Thrones” or “Dancing with the Stars.” Or read one word of “Harry Potter” or “The Hunger Ganes.” I don’t speak DC or Marvel. I think I saw “Iron Man” once.
Have you ever wanted to be somebody? I mean, other than the somebody that you are? If we’re honest, most of us might admit there have been times in our lives when we wanted to be richer or smarter, better looking or more loved. My mother wanted to be all of that.
