When omicron fades, can U.S. finally get a handle on pandemic?

For the first time in a long while, there’s good news about COVID-19. The omicron wave is cresting in the U.S., and in many states is already receding. A respite from SARS-CoV-2 could well follow. And if new variants eventually emerge, it may be possible to live with them – that is, without shutting businesses, always wearing masks and social distancing.

Slanderous mailer embodies what’s wrong with local politics

Larry Blick, Independence To the editor: Who is so afraid of Rory Rowland’s proposals for ethics reform, contribution limits and term limits for the mayor that they will sponsor a scurrilous mailer full of lies and slander? I know Rory Rowland to be a person of integrity, honesty and high moral standards. Dark money used for scurrilous, slanderous mailers at the last minute is what is wrong with our city politics.

A thank-you to Independence mayoral candidates

Anitra Steele Forums chair, League of Women Voters of Kansas City/Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties To the editor: As forums chair for the League of Women Voters, Kansas City, Jackson, Platte and Clay Counties I want to thank all the Independence mayoral candidates for participating in our mayoral primary candidates forum last Thursday evening. Our co-sponsor, the Walnut Gardens Community of Christ Church, really supported this effort in voter education and “got the word out." In spite of Zoom difficulties, all the candidates persevered and gave thoughtful answers to the questions time allowed.
