Ellis leaves Comets in midseason

Kansas City native and former Sporting Kansas City starter Kevin Ellis informed the Kansas City Comets over the weekend that he is leaving the Major Arena Soccer League team. He sent player/coach Leo Gibson an email informing him that he would no longer be a part of the 10-2-1 team that is leading the MASL’s Central Division with 10 regular season games remaining.

Former Dolphins coach Flores: Race played a factor in firing

MIAMI – Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores thinks race placed a factor in the team’s decision to fire him in January. Speaking on the “I Am Athlete” podcast co-hosted by former NFL wide receivers Chad Johnson and Brandon Marshall, and Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Flores alleged he was given tasks that he doesn’t think would have been required of a white head coach. Flores went 25-24 in three seasons with Miami before being let go on Jan. 10.

Home cooking for Kansas City Comets’ win

Two homegrown members of the Kansas City Comets played big roles in their team’s 11-4 victory over Milwaukee Sunday night at Cable Dahmer Arena. Kansas City native Lou Misner picked up his second win of the season in goal after taking an 8-4 loss Saturday in Milwaukee, and Overland Park, Kan., product Nick McDonald enjoyed a big night, scoring two goals and adding as assist in just his second start of the season.

Four area wrestlers claim state titles

COLUMBIA – St. Michael the Archangel Catholic wrestling coach Matt Infranca said his heavyweight Sampson Stillwell is “genetically a freak.” Stillwell is just a freshman and despite an injury to this season made the greatest possible impact for the Guardians at the MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships Saturday at Mizzou Arena.
