Fifty years ago this week, amid the Arab oil embargo and a worsening energy shortage, The Examiner ran this photograph with this caption: DOING HER PART: Mrs. Jerry Elliiot was one of many Independence residents who acted quickly to comply with President Nixon's new energy conservation measures. She stepped out into her yard and turned a valve, shutting off her gas yard light. Gas Company officials said most of the lights can easily be turned off with a valve at the base of the light head, but they believe most gas lights are serving a necessary purpose and are not recommending that they be turned off.
