The City of Independence Environmental Health Division conducts inspections anywhere food is handled, prepared and served to the public within city limits. Critical violations must be handled within 72 hours.

Independence Manor Care Center, 1600 S. Kings Hwy. – On April 7, cups on a tray were found sitting on top of the hand sink; corrected.

V'S Ristorante, 10819 E. U.S. 40 – On April 7, a container of frozen pasta was observed with a frozen towel being stored directly on top of pasta. Owner stated that wet clean towels (terry cloth style) are placed on pasta to keep it moist after cooking. Towels are not an approved food contact surface and can contaminate food.

Cracker Barrel, 4110 S Lee's Summit Road – On April 12, the vacuum breaker on the mop sink had a leak; this may be due to the lines that feed the chemical dispensers in this area. When line is charged back pressure can make the vacuum breaker fail.

Square Pizza, 208 W. Maple Ave. – On April 15, the vacuum breaker on the mop sink faucet was in disrepair; re-inspection required.

Corner Cafe, 4215 S. Little Blue Pkwy. – On April 19, food in the drawer cooler had a temperature of 49 degrees (under the grill); these food items were thrown away, do not use this unit until corrected.

Fairmount Elementary School, 10020 E. Kentucky Road – On April 19, the reach-in cooler (near ice machine) had an ambient air temperature of 55 degrees; there was only one potentially hazardous food being kept in unit and the cheese sticks had an internal temperature of 51.2 degrees. Cheese boxes were marked with the date 4/14; discarded. The tall hot holding unit (hot box) had an ambient air temperature of 139 degrees; cooked chicken had was 130 degrees and cooked sweet potatoes were 131.2 degrees. Chicken and potatoes were the only PHF inside unit and had been there for 30 minutes, so both items were re-heated to 165 and were moved to a different holding unit. Re-inspection required.

Golden Corral, 19120 E. Valley View Pkwy. – On April 19, a bag of ice cream mix was found sitting in the ice machine ice; this contaminated the ice and the ice machine must be emptied and cleaned before making new ice. The plumbing under the dish machine pass-thru table was not constructed correctly. It sits on the ground and does not allow for water or food to flow through. The pans to collect the food debris are not working properly and a professional fitting of such screens and pans must be installed.

Vivilore, 10815 E. Winner Road – On April 19, Chemical dispensers were hooked directly to the faucet on the mop sink via a hose; correct by running a separate line to chemicals and repairing vacuum breaker or remove chemical connection and maintain an air gap. Re-inspection required.
