1 Pets in the Park – This event, organized by the Independence Kiwanis Club and Independence Parks &|Recreation and Tourism, will be held Saturday at Waterfall Park, 4501 S. Bass Pro Drive, Independence. Pet judging registration is at 10 a.m., with judging at 10:30 a.m. A parade will follow the judging and activities continue until 1 p.m. Get your pet a rabies vaccination for $5 and microchipped for $20. Visit with area vendors about pet products, services and adoptions, including off-leash training, watch agility demonstrations and more. The Kiwanis Pet Judging contest is for ages 12 and under and their pets, with an awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Categories include: Best trick, most unusual, best kid/pet look- a-likes and All American Pet. 2 Drop-Off Depot – The Depot will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and is at 875 Vista Ave., Independence. Items accepted: Trash: Cars, $11; pickups, SUVs, vans, trailers less than 8 feet, $16; trailers 8 feet or longer, $26 – furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpet, plumbing fixtures, sheetrock, windows, shingles, fencing, landscape timbers, bricks, paving stones, etc. (No televisions, computer monitors, liquids, gas tanks, or sealed drums.) Brush: $11 per vehicle for limbs, firewood, bush and stumps, no bagged leaves or grass. Tires: Car, $2; car tire on rim, $4; truck, $5; truck tire on rim, $11; farm/tractor tire, $16. Appliances: $15 each for refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters, washers, dryers, etc. Lawnmowers: No charge, but all fluids must be drained. Batteries: No charge for auto, boat, lawnmower, motorcycle. Open to Independence residents only. Bring a valid driver's license or recent utility bill. Residential vehicles only, no commercial vehicles or vehicles larger than a pickup truck allowed. Cash or local check only, no credit or debit cards or coins accepted.
3 Mom’s Baby Shower – This event, sponsored by the Independence Kiwanis Club and benefiting CAPA, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hy-Vee, 23rd Street and Lee’s Summit Road, Independence. Customers will be asked to purchase items, such as formula and diapers at this Hy-Vee for CAPA. This is a Kiwanis Metro Event and other area Hy-Vee stores will be participating with different recipients. Monetary donations accepted.
4 Discover Nature Fishing – This is a great time of year to take your family fishing. The experts at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center will teach some fishing basics, provide equipment and worms and then let you practice your new fishing skills, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Kids who attend will be entered in a drawing at the end of the summer for a new fishing pole and tackle box. Lessons 1 and 2 of the Discover Nature Fishing program are included in this class. The Nature Center is at 1401 N.W. Park Road in Blue Springs. This is a free event, but registration is required, call 228-3766 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
5 RideKC Taxi Pilot Program – Seniors and riders with disabilities will have more freedom to travel around the metro area with this program, which is available to Independence residents 65 and older, as well as those with a disability. Applications must be submitted, and users will be issued an ID card for acceptance. The RideKC Taxi Voucher program uses the company 10/10 Taxi; eligible riders can ride within the region, up to 8 miles for $5 (each way) plus $2 per additional mile. Each qualified resident is eligible for eight one-way trips each month. The service is available any day at any time, including weekends and holidays.
