The drumline from Ruskin High School played a series of cadences to open Thursdays fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration at Independence Uptown Market on the Square. Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson later provided a keynote address, and live music performers entertained the crowd throughout the afternoon. The Juneteenth Legacy Dinner will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the Truman Habitat for Humanitys Young School building, 501 N. Dodgion St., Independence, and at 10 a.m. Saturday there will be a Juneteenth Legacy Parade in McCoy Park, where the predominantly Black neighborhood called The Neck was in Independence until the mid-20th century.
